Gwendi Klisa

Gwendi Klisa is a London based illustrator and supporting tutor for Central Saint Martins. Her clients include the Guardian, Fit For Fun and Varoom Magazine. She works in pen and pencils in quick loose line drawings. She also adds colour or ink washes to her drawings and works mostly from real life scenes. I really love these quick sketches. It feels like I'm looking at a fleeting moment in time which Klisa captures in a pretty, flowing style.

Collaboration: Review

This project relied greatly upon working well in a group. As I am used to working on my own through projects, I was worried about how collaborating would affect my work. Now that its over I feel that collaborating helped me a great deal and as a group we made a final piece which answered the story telling brief well.

When starting the project each of us had our own initial ideas of how we should go about making the story telling device. As we couldn't all get what we wanted, this brief involved a lot of discussion and compromise. The mix of Illustration and Graphic design members in the group had a big affect on the work that we produced. In one way the mix helped us to all look at new ways of achieving the brief. Each of us had our own ways of working which we brought to the group. We also had workshops which we each wanted to use in the final installation, again affecting the outcome of our work. The changes and compromises we each had to make for this all to work were sometimes difficult to overcome. If the problem was about something one of us thought would have been best for the installation but went against the group, this caused arguments and more changes to the planned work.

I think that one area which could be improved if done again is time management. After planning what would be in our installation piece we worked through each one not knowing how long each would take us to make. Some were quick and easy to find and make. others were held up by lack of materials, equipment or help in areas we weren't confident in. These problems meant that we had to adapt our plans to make each area work in time for the deadline.

Overall I felt that the corridor installation was done well even after all the changes we were forced to make in the end. It told the story in an non-linear and non-traditional way which generated a lot of interest from the students and tutors who saw it. After working through this brief in a group I feel that it helped us to make something which I wouldn't have if I was working on my own and would collaborate again.

Collaboration: Installation

As we started to put up the different parts of our corridor installation we got a positive response from other students and from tutors. Some of the interactive elements to our pieces worked well and others needed more time to plan out safely, which we didn't have time to do. The way it was all put up over the span of a week, with people seeing it in sections on a regular basis, the idea of a unveiling was left till last and we didn't think through what we were going to do about the 'event' idea at the end. This would have been good to do, along with good advertising for the event, but our lack of planning and time management  resulted in us failing to achieve this outcome for the installation.

These were taken throughout the final weeks of the project as we were putting up all the elements of the show. Although I felt some worked well, others could have used more work and more time on them to improve the idea.

Collaboration : Story Telling Device

This story telling project was based on the idea of collaboration. By collaborating with other illustrators and graphic designers we had to create a 'device' which told one of three stories in a non-traditional way. As this device could be made using any media and materials available and in any format we as a group chose, this project was very open and gave us a chance to work in ways we may not have done before now.

We chose the Story of Captain Murderer to work with and picked out the key points in the plot and decided to use them alone to tell the story. After talking through other more simple ideas we decided to retell the story in a corridor installation using the key plot points as a guide.
